10x10

Well, this post is gonna be looong. Not because of the text, but because of the images! Here are some of my new projects. All are hand made with little 10x10 canvas frames, acrylic and love :) Enjoy:

And this is how it looks on my wall:

Another dressed fridge

Hi there,

Recently I got a little fetish for making stuff for fridge doors.
It all started with a the cat idea where I made a big cat pattern out of wallpaper, which turned out to be one of my favorite: http://thefreestylerblog.blogspot.co.il/2015/01/my-cat-fridge.html
Continued with another one, where I turned a piece of cloth into a fridge upper door cover: http://thefreestylerblog.blogspot.co.il/2015/02/first-we-eat.html

This time, I wanted it to be just a magnet. But a big one, so it would be more of a jewelry rather than notes holder.

I ended up with a bunny full of flowers:

Play!

So, I sat all day and drew this to a friend of mine.

Hope she'll like it.

A bit on the making process:
Flowers:
One stroke painting technique (see my other post for more details http://thefreestylerblog.blogspot.co.il/2015/02/phones-and-roses_16.html)

Bunny:
 Well...just drew it.

Vnitage Frame:
This one has a story.
First I painted kind of big bold frame. The moment it was finished I hated it so much!

Then came the big regret...why the heck did I need to do it??
And then...I remembered that acrylic paint can be washed. I took some wet wipes and started to gently scrub the part I didn't like.

I was determent to remove it completely, but then in the middle of the process I saw that if I remove only a part of it, it turns out quite cool - I get kind of "pixelized" texture (because the canvas itself has a texture)

I liked how it turned out, so I decided to do this for the entire frame.

So I learned two things out of this experiment. First, you can always correct your acrylic painting (eg. with wet wipes), second you can create artificial vintage/pixelized texture by removing paint partially.

Enjoy.

It's not old, it's vintage

As a child I truly hated flea markets. Really. couldn't get the idea why would anyone want to buy some other's people junk. Then I grew up, and understood: this is a vintage heaven!
Here is some of the stuff I got myself:

1. THE VINYL:
Got this at Flohmarkt am Mauerpark in Berlin. This is one of the coolest places to hang out on Sunday. The market is full of good stuff, good food, and also some amateur musicians which perform near by.
Now, vinyl, I must say, Pinerest is full of cool stuff you can do with an old vinyl, and I'm sure going to try some in future. But for now I've just chosen the super easy way, all you need is one little nail and a hammer. Just hang it using the little hole in the middle.

4. THE CANDLE BOTTLE:
Nice idea, they cut the bottle and turn it into a cool candle holder:

there is a slot to place the candle:

And then just hang it:

3. THE PILLOW:

I'm not quite sure what is the original purpose of this pillow, it looks like those pillows that you put on the chair, only a huge one. But as I saw it, the first ting I thought of is my little fluff.

Well, took him exactly five minutes to decide that this must be a present for him (same exact thing happened with the new sofa, and the new chair, and the new blanket... :))

7. THE CARPET:
OK, I got this for like two dollars. Yes, this is not some sophisticated piece of art, but there is something very relaxing in it's simplicity, it makes you feel cozy. With the right arrangement, it can add some chick to the place. I've put it in my bedroom.

8. THE TINY PATIPHON:
This one is just cute. no comments. Just cute.

Enjoy your flea market shopping!

Phones and Roses

I love acrylic paints. They are cheap, look good, and they can color nearly everything - canvas, fabric, walls, wood, plastic (but not your hands! Since they are water based, it is easy to wash your them if things get messy).

I decided that my phone should wear something more sexy than the boring transparent case it had.
This is how it turned out:

First I colored the entire case with gray paint, and on top of that the rose:

The technique is called 'one stroke painting'. The first time I saw paintings done with this technique I thought it must take years till someone can paint like that. Later I found out that there are plenty of good youtube tutorials and books that explain the method step by step. You have to practice a bit, but nice results can be seen quite quickly.

Here is one of my favorite tutorials:

First we eat

Designing for men was always a big challenge for me. Well lets face it, the color range gets limited to what? 3 colors? (and also huge restriction regarding pink...)

I wanted to make something to a friend of mine. I wanted it to be noticeable, easily removable and funny. The 'noticeable and removable' part led me to think of taking a big piece of fabric, adding some magnets behind it and apply it on the fridge. The 'funny' part had to do something with writing on it. So I found the 'first we eat , then we do everything else' genius quote (I wish I would come up with it by myself, but someone already did before :), and luckily shared it on pinterest).

Drawing it all by hand (instead of using stencils) was not one of my best decisions...took so much time. But I must say it added some uniqueness to the peace. And most important, my friend liked it. A lot.

Here is how it turned out:

Removable - as promised:

A little about the making process:
I used jeans fabric, magnets, and neon yellow acrylic paint.
First I printed all the letters on regular paper. Then copied it on a copy paper and then tried to copy it on the fabric. This step was not easy as the fabric is very dark, and you can hardly see the pen/pencil on it. I guess  there is some more elegant solution for this but I just didn't have anything else in mind. And finally the last step - applying the color (the step that took forever!). If you decide to use any other fabric, keep in mind that you might need to sew the contour edges to prevent threads pop out.

My cat fridge

When I see a plain surface, I always have an unexplained urge to change it to something more complicated, to spice it up. This was what happened to my fridge. One day I was staring at it, and realized that I have some huge space to work on, and go crazy if I want too.

I wanted to create something quite big, kind of sophisticated but not too colorful. So I thought it would be cool to make some big cat silhouette (I'm a cat person). For that purpose I bought 2 meters of black plain sticky wallpaper (the one with the glue on the other side). Drew the cat on it (on the glue paper side), and cut it gently. By the way, this is another reason for my romance with wallpapers. You can draw on it whatever shape you want, easily cut it, and apply anywhere.

So, here is my new fridge:

To make it a bit more interesting, I decided to add the little pink bow (it has a magnet behind, so it is removable):

Fabric canvas

Putting fabric on top of plain canvas is a quite common decoration trick, and there's a good reason for that - easier than actually painting, and can make a big difference to the room.

I made one with two layers: the smaller canvas with the floral pattern fabric, and behind, there is a bigger one with plain gray fabric.

Usually I'm quite ok with estimating how much time and effort it will take to complete a project, but with this one, I have to say I really missed it. I'm sorry for not having the 'in process' images, I made it long before the decision to open a blog, but here are the detailed steps:

1.  Buy two canvases which are different sizes but same ratio dimensions (width and height).
2.  Choose fabrics for the two layers (buy it in a size that will allow fixing mistakes later)
3.  Iron the fabric if needed (This one took me a while :( )
4.  Wrapping the canvases with the fabric: I used a staple gun to stabilize the fabric (on the hidden canvas side). The canvases I used are quite big, so it wasn't that easy to make sure the fabric is stretched evenly.
5. The hardest part: as there are two layers, I had to attach them, and make sure the small one sits exactly in the middle of the bigger one.

Enjoy making yours!

Wallpapering

About two years ago I rented a small apartment in Tel Aviv - the cool city that never sleeps, has no parking space, and is full of tiny tiny apartments.

I really wanted my place to feel warm cozy and well designed. The problem of course is that you can't really follow your heart and design it as you wish. So I was looking for some intermediate solution - not too expensive, friendly to the angry apartment owner, and at the same time stylish.
It was then when I discovered the sticky wallpaper - the one that has one side with glue on it.

The reason I fell in love with it is that it is perfectly removable without damaging the surface, really easy to apply, and magically upgrades you space (oh... and cheap!).

So, the first wallpaper work I would like to share is my closet makeover. I don't have the "before" picture, but trust me it was one ugly old formica closet. I wanted to cover it all, so I bought 3 meters of blue wallpaper with gold print on it, and some black and white wallpaper for decoration.

Here is the final result:

The making process was quite easy as you don't have to glue it by yourself - you only remove the paper layer and remain with the sticky side ready to be applied. In addition I painted the old knobs
with black acrylic paint (can't live without my acrylic paints, but that's for another post).

Start!

I've been waiting for this 'first post' time for quite long (yep, turns out, designing a blog is a tough cookie..), and here we are, the blog design is ready, and now there's this 'exiting' moment of staring at the screen not really knowing what to write. Well...I guess I'm lucky to have some images to post - they speak better :).

A bit more seriously, I really love designing, working with different materials and creating new things (and of course the fun part - showing off!). I do it ever since I remember myself, only now I decided to put it in some kind of 'notebook'. Hopefully this notebook will become an inspiring collection of design ideas, tips and tricks. As usually I design and create from scratch, the materials I use are simple and not expensive. In my posts I'll try to tell about the making process, and also how I got the design idea.

So let's get started! I hope you'll enjoy.
